Did you know that your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make space for the new cells to come, every 30 days? Sometimes these dead cells don’t come off completely and require a little support from us. This is where exfoliation comes in. It is the process of removing dead skin cells from your skin’s surface.

Exfoliation is important because without it your skin can get dry, flakey and have clogged pores.

Exfoliation has proved to improve the appearance of our skin various ways, some of them being, making the skin brighter, improving the efficacy of your beauty products and reducing breakouts with the reduction in clogged pores.

There are two ways that you can exfoliate, physically and chemically. Physical exfoliation, as the word goes, is the process of exfoliating with an exfoliation product or method manually. In comparison to chemical exfoliation, physical exfoliation is easier, easily accessible and sometimes could be done in the comfort of your home with natural substances such as DIY scrubs. The results are also almost immediate.

Chemical exfoliation requires different chemicals, such as retinol and hydroxyl acids with enzymes to renew your skin. This process can offer much more dramatic results that a physical exfoliation. However, it does take more time for optimal results to appear. It is also important to note that both ways can irritate your skin if done the wrong way. Especially in the case of chemical exfoliation, it is best to seek guidance from dermatologist prior to starting.

Stop exfoliating if you notice your skin turning red, inflamed, peeling or irritated.

Those who use medication or certain acne products best not exfoliate because it might worsen your symptoms or lead to breakouts.
