I’m going to talk about what to do with the hundreds of skincare products sitting in your bathroom. Some of you have no idea about the correct order of putting skincare products on your face. You might wonder, which comes first, what is last, how to apply serums etc. don’t worry I’ll help you to figure out the correct order to put your skincare products as you can get maximum benefit. And remember to wait until each product has dried up before moving on to the next one.

There are two simple ways to remember the order for layering skincare products.

  1. Thinnest to thickest texture – that means you should start with light textured products to heavy textured products. Such as toners, serums, essences. Then apply heavier ones such as lotions, creams.
  2. Water- based products before oil-based products – as you know oil and water don’t mix. Likewise you shouldn’t apply water- based products and oil-based products together as oil can block water from penetrating. That means you need to apply water-based products first. Let them absorb into your skin and then apply oil-based products on top. Always take your time while applying the products.

Now let’s discuss each step in detail:

Day routine:

1. Cleanser – the first thing you should do in the morning is to cleanse your face to get rid of all the dirt that come into contact with your face while you were sleeping. For instance, your pillow case contains so many dirt than you think like dandruff, dead skin cells you shed.

2. Toner – you need to apply a toner immediately after cleansing to prepare your skin for the rest of your skincare routine. Good toner balances your skin pH and it’s intended to hydrate your skin.

3. Serum – it is good to use an antioxidant- based serum like Vitamin C. Vitamin C has so many benefits including hydrating, brightening, firm skin and protects against sun damage. So it’s important to add a Vitamin C serum to your skincare routine. If you like you can add hydrating serum like Hyaluronic acid to your skincare routine as well. Hydrating serums can be used at any time of the day.

4. Eye cream– pat some eye cream around your eyes. Don’t ever rub your eye cream, just pat it until it gets fully absorbed. It will help you to make your eyes look brighter and less tired.

5. Spot treatment – now it’s time to treat your acne/ pimples.

6. Moisturizer with SPF / Sunscreen – you need to apply a moisturizer generously on the face and neck to hydrate your skin without clogging your pores. And finish your skincare routine with a sunscreen with at least SPF30 to protect your skin from the sun’s harmful UV rays. As we are living in a tropical country you must apply a good SPF. This is the final step before you putting any makeup and this is the final step to ensure that your skin is fully protected.

Night routine:

1. Makeup remover – you need to remove any makeup from your face before you go to bed as it can be led to clog your pores and breakouts. You can use a micellar cleansing water to remove your makeup.

2. Cleanser – you can use a cleanser to remove any impurities on your face and it will help you to have a clean base to work on and it will allow your skin care products to penetrate your skin.

3. Toner– as we talked about in the morning routine, you need to apply toner right after cleansing your face.

4. Serum– you can apply an anti-aging serum like Retinol as a PM serum. Don’t use any Vitamin C serums or products with Retinol. It will cause irritations.

5. Eye cream – Don’t forget your eye cream. There is no better time than night to provide it with the boost your eye needs.

6. Spot Treatment

7. Moisturizer – Don’t skip this part. You need to apply a good moisturizer to ensure that your skin is well moisturized and locked while you are sleeping.

Always remember that AM skincare aims to protect your skin while PM skincare aims to restore/repair your skin.
